i think a big divide in the way that people are expected to behave (which we see a lot on the internet) may basically come down to how you define "respect"
a lot of people think "i respect this person" means "i try to treat this person how i would want to be treated"
whereas a lot of other people think "i respect this person" means "i try to treat this person how they want to be treated"
i personally prefer the latter. but you see lots of people who don't!

@pan yes! and due to this, it should make sense that when someone says something that doesn't match up with your own experience, it's very likely that they ARE telling the truth and you should believe them
obviously in theory someone COULD be lying about their own feelings or experiences. but there is essentially *no* downside to giving them the benefit of the doubt and treating their perspective as valid, whereas there's a huge downside to dismissing them
