@kibi speaking as someone who's written css: it's just really really easy to do this:

.some-elem {
color: $white;
background: $black;
&:hover {
background: $black-2;
}
}

and then you swap color: black, background: white
whoops you didn't notice the hover background! now you've got black on black

@kibi this is really more hypertext (HTML) authoring than true "web design" but I can see how one would lump them together.
