I think that fully distributed social networks, like Secure Scuttlebutt, are ultimately the future. But I also think they're not the *near* future (or the alternative present). The attached image illustrates why. Federated networks make a lot more sense in the present day where limited storage and 2-tier internet access are unfortunate realities.

also- there are mostly tech dudes there right now
(early adopters self selecting)

i get it
and the privacy tech is cool
and on the right track (users own their data)
but now the "social" part needs to be built up somehow

tech dudes have a bad track record here
(mastodon notwithstanding)

(mastodon is loaded with them)

(how much of the experience of being alive exists only in our minds?)
