Hey #gardening Masto, do you have suggestions for drainage? I have some hanging containers left over from the landlord, and I just realized they have 0 drainage. Should I just drill holes in the bottom, or is there a better solution?
@amphetamine @deathmlem oh hi yes
uh
we'd personally confirm their lack of drainage, like, we've gotten a hanging planter made of glass and the bottom corners just aren't sealed well so it drips thru okay? so like, you can try filling it with water first to be totes sure.
but yeah, drilling holes in the bottom should probably do you okay, as long as they're not big enough to let too much dirt thru and stuff. you may also want a container beneath if you care about what it's hanging over
@amphetamine @deathmlem also we're not majorly an expert ^^;
@Fidgetcetera @amphetamine I should have included a picture
@deathmlem @amphetamine omg those are so cute !!!
we don't see a problem with drilling holes in them, looks like it'd go okay!
@deathmlem
cc @mawr! I remember we talked about hanging baskets some, and I remember you don't drill holes or anything, but like how did we handle drainage / etc again?
@deathmlem @adeptomega put a big layer of stones (~15-20% of the height of the pot) on the bottom of the pot to prevent the soil from soaking in excess water, and water just carefully enough to not exceed that buffer. ^^
@mawr @deathmlem
Thank you! ^^
I'll have to remember this for container gardening in general, this sounds very useful...! Does the water at the bottom not become a problem?
@deathmlem @adeptomega it sits there for a while, but the soil eventually soaks it all up. It just slows the process down enough to keep most plants' roots from rotting.
@deathmlem One modification we make over the drilled hole approach is to cut out a length of screen fabric and place it over the hole before filling in dirt. It’s cheap from a hardware store, ensures adequate drainage, and ensures moist dirt stays in the planter.
But yeah, uncovered drill holes are also usually fine.
@deathmlem holes would be the best thing. Lining the bottom with fine gravel would help but holes are better
@deathmlem this is something @Fidgetcetera would know
