i think i might do what @iliana did and have a vinyl player, and some records, because that's now the cool kid way of doing things.
also there's probably some gems you can't find digital copies of
@KitRedgrave they do but they're also the extremely bad quality ones
@jk oh. hmm. are there good ones with analog outs? computer could deal with the conversion then
@KitRedgrave yes, all have analog outs, but you'll need a preamp to boost the miniscule signal they put out, and the preamp needs to have RIAA equalization otherwise the record will sound extremely tinny!
@jk oh, neat bit of engineering there :3
@KitRedgrave yeah! it's why hi-fis commonly have a specific 'phono' input separate from the other aux inputs (which just has a much higher input impedance & amplifier & RIAA etc)
@KitRedgrave there were a buncha USB record players for a while but they aren't that high quality
@KitRedgrave they do but they're not great compared to a dedicated analog-digital converter
most records have digital equivalents these days anyway
@iliana there are a few out there that are hard to find... there are some things already that are these old city pop things from japan that i now can't easily find that aren't region-locked, but vinyls can get passed around for a while
@KitRedgrave yeah, there was a really good guide on how to rip vinyl back when whatcd was still alive... *sigh*
anyway, some turntables have usb output built-in, and if that doesn't work, then you could always build an audio chain to record directly from an analog output
@KitRedgrave mine has an aux out. Pain in the ass to manually chop the tracks apart and name them though.
@KitRedgrave @iliana Having a turntable is dope as fuck you should get one
@KitRedgrave I know a label I've enjoyed a lot from, Acting Press, is vinyl only :\
(not that those prices are especially inviting at this point)
i wonder if they have record players with analog-digital converters attached to them, so one could rip vinyls to disk
