I'm going to have to agree. I do use hashtags on here, primarily as a way of saying "I want this toot to be searchable". But trending tags seems like a way of throwing gasoline on meta drama and enabling pile-ons.

@KitRedgrave trending is a good thing for encouraging ppl to actually use tags, which makes content searchable, which is a good thing for everyone.

@KitRedgrave (tagging @charlag too) hashtags are entirely optional tbh, you don't have to use them or pay attention to trends at all. the point of a hashtag is searchability, since we're not doing full-text search analytics. you can say you don't need discoverability but that aspect of twitter was kinda good actually, before twitter fucked it up

i just don't think they need to be in-your-face, and they should work w/ upcoming federation relays.
