i think The Browser is the new Wintel. nobody really thought it was the best or especially wanted it (ok some people did/do) but we're kinda stuck with it and if you make a thing, thats where it has to run. eventually some New Thing will come along on a higher level of abstraction and render the whole thing moot, but it'll take 15-20 years, and the New Thing will be just as bad, but newer
